A few people have mentioned that Cade Metz, a reporter from the Register, has been contacting Wikipedians and asking them questions. Apparently he's mentioned that he keeps his sources confidential and is giving me as a reference. At least one person has suggested that there is some irony here ("I don't reveal my sources, just ask my source, [name]"). There is not, as he has permission to list me as a source.
I have given Cade two telephone interviews, and we have exchanged a number of emails. Cade has been fastidiously honorable in his reporting; he has been careful to quote me accurately and has not attributed to me any statement which I have not given him permission to do so. He has done nothing to abuse my trust, and I feel safe that he can be trusted.

The funny thing is, if someone at just the Register level is able to drive Jimmy and Wikipedia berserk with paranoia and instant over-the-top information control, what happens when someone at the New York Times or CNN decides to dig under the covers?
ReplyDeleteIt seriously is just a ticking countdown until this happens, and each passing "incident" and news story at the Register level just takes a few more minutes, days, or weeks off of the countdown that much faster.
What happens when CNN calls out Wikipedia? Will we see Jimbo call them trolls, and Guy Chapman start removing links to CNN.com?
There's been plenty of harsh mainstream criticism of wikipedia from day one.
ReplyDeleteThe Wikipedia elite is fortunate that the TV writers are on strike, putting all the late night shows that comment on current events into reruns; otherwise, there'd probably be some Wikipedia ridicule on some of the shows by now. Colbert, in particular, likes to make fun of Wikipedia whenever anything gets in the news about it.
ReplyDeleteLeno and O'Brien going back now without writers and Colbert to follow Jan. 7:
ReplyDeleteDon't you realize, this is everyone's chance to write your own material and send it into desperate talk show hosts!
omg, Kelly you should totally send material in to talk show hosts about Wikipedia. The stuff in your blog is funnier than most of their drivel anyway; this could be your big chance!
