Data absorption

I've been studying up for FCC Part 97 elements 2, 3, and 4 the past week, which is part of why I haven't been writing as much here. Anyway, earlier this evening I took the practice tests (over at AA9PW's practice site) and passed all three; while I usually pass the Technician test, the General test has been hit or miss up to now and I've never passed the Extra test before. Another couple weeks of study with mnemosyne and I ought to be able to "enter at Extra".

  1. Good luck, Kelly. I passed the Extra in 1980. I took it at the FCC office in San Francisco, and it included a 20 wpm Morse Code test. The Internet is much more fun than Morse Code (and a bit more efficient if you don't include Wikipedia), so I've been inactive in ham radio for years now. I got my General in 1963 when I was 15. But I just memorized questions and answers, and didn't know much about electronics back then. -- KM6E

  2. Yes, good luck. I got my tech ticket in 2004 and kept studying and went all the way up to Extra. I'm glad I did, it's a fun hobby.

Not only that, but imagine a hobby where you not only know the first and last names of everyone participating, but you also know their QTH as well! Funny, I don't hear a lot of hams complain about stalking and that sort of thing...

At the very least make sure you get a General ticket, so that you can enjoy HF. But I'd suggest that you go straight for Extra, while you still have the motivation to do so. When I got my General, I had to pass 5 wpm morse, but I do not think there is a morse requirement for any class now, so that will make it a little easier.

I am broke and have been thinking about selling my HF rig. The only reason I don't is because of the Liberty Net on or around 3.950. The net control is W1WCR and they discuss politics and current events. It is a unique net--I've never came across another like it. I wonder if Daniel has ever listened to it...Anyway, It may be a net you'd enjoy, Kelly.

Congrats on doing well with the practice tests and if you need any help with anything Kelly, I'd be happy to help if I can. 73

  3. I got a Novice-class license back around 1979 (KA2EBW... weird I actually remember the call letters given how little I ever actually used the thing), but let it lapse (5 years later?) because I lost interest.
